Learning How to Change is More Important Than the Change Itself

Uncategorized Oct 02, 2024

In today’s world, change is the only constant. Whether it's new technologies, shifting markets, or evolving team dynamics, we’re all required to adapt. I believe that how we approach change often matters more than the change itself.

At Agile People Slovenia, we emphasize that adaptability is not just about responding to what’s happening around us; it’s about cultivating a mindset that allows us to thrive in uncertainty. The journey of learning how to change — with intention, flexibility, and openness — is what truly shapes an agile individual or organization.

The Mechanics of Change vs. the Mindset of Learning

Often, when we talk about change, we focus on the mechanics: new tools, processes, or strategies. We set goals, create action plans, and measure progress. But here’s the thing — even the best-laid plans can falter if the people involved aren’t equipped to navigate the ambiguity that comes with change.

Learning how to change is about developing a mindset where experimentation and reflection become second nature. It’s about understanding that change isn’t linear; it’s messy, it’s iterative, and sometimes it doesn’t lead where we expected. But that’s okay. The key is being willing to adjust, to learn from failures, and to embrace the unknown.

Agile as a Learning Framework

Agile, at its core, isn’t just a set of practices for managing projects. It’s a learning framework designed to help teams and individuals continuously improve. Iteration, feedback loops, and retrospectives aren’t just activities — they are opportunities for growth. When we focus too much on the outcome, we can miss out on the insights that come from the process itself.

One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned in my agile journey is that the process of learning to change is more transformative than any single change we implement. Whether it’s tweaking a sprint process, adjusting communication flows, or rethinking team roles, the real value lies in how we approach the next challenge, not just how we solve today’s problem.

From Fixed to Growth: Cultivating the Right Attitude

This brings me to one of the biggest obstacles to change: a fixed mindset. People often resist change because they fear failure, they feel overwhelmed by uncertainty, or they are simply comfortable with the status quo. However, what we need is a growth mindset — an openness to learning, an acceptance that mistakes are part of progress, and a belief that we are capable of evolving.

I’ve worked with teams that initially struggled with this shift, but once they embraced a growth mindset, the impact was profound. Suddenly, they weren’t just executing agile practices; they were embodying the agile philosophy. They became more resilient, more collaborative, and more creative in how they tackled challenges.

Leading Change: It’s About the Journey, Not Just the Destination

As leaders, it’s crucial to guide teams not just through what changes need to happen, but how to embrace change as a continual process. This involves creating environments where experimentation is encouraged, where reflection is part of the rhythm, and where learning is celebrated over immediate results.

We can achieve this by fostering psychological safety, promoting transparency, and modeling the behaviors we wish to see. When we do this, we enable our teams to not only adapt to change but to actively seek it out — to become agents of change themselves.

In a world where change is inevitable, the ability to learn how to change is the ultimate skill. At Agile People Slovenia, we believe that the most successful teams and organizations are those that don’t just manage change but thrive in it by continuously learning, iterating, and growing. So, next time you’re faced with a new challenge, remember: the change itself is important, but the journey of learning how to change will be what defines your success.
